Who we can help

Our services are available to all Somali women and children who need our help. Our catchment area is primarily the London Borough of Wandsworth, but a lack of women-only services in neighbouring boroughs means that women from other parts of South London sometimes need our help. These women are never turned away. We accept self and agency referrals.

We recognise that to improve the lives of women and children, Somali men sometimes need our help and support too. However, our priority is to work directly with women and children. We will support Somali men only as the relatives of our clients. However, we maintain strong links with projects that work with Somali men, and are happy to offer telephone advice and referrals on to more appropriate projects for those men who do approach us and are in need of help and support.

ASWAC Agenda on FGM Awareness:

At ASWAC, we are committed to raising awareness, fostering dialogue, and supporting efforts to end Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). Our agenda focuses on key areas that bring together communities, professionals, and decision-makers to create lasting change:

  • Understanding Government Action
Explore the UK government’s strategies for tackling violence against women and girls, and assess how these policies impact the fight to end FGM.
  • FGM as a Public Health Issue
Discuss what it means to address FGM through a public health lens, and how this approach can help reduce the number of cases and strengthen support for survivors.
  • Community Engagement
Support local authorities in developing strategies that encourage open and safe conversations within communities about the dangers of FGM and its harmful effects.
  • Training and Best Practice
Advocate for mandatory, high-quality training for all professionals who work with children and vulnerable adults. Share knowledge, skills, and best practices to improve protection and care.
  • Closing the Support Gap
Work to reduce the delay between FGM taking place, being reported, and survivors receiving the help they need. Ensure timely, compassionate support services are accessible to all.
